Asbestos removal for Sherwood Queenslanders, post-war homes and renovations

Sherwood is a well-established south-west Brisbane suburb on the river, already a residential suburb by the early 1920s. Waves of building after each World War filled in the farmland, and newer homes and townhouses continue to wrap around the older Queenslanders that once stood on large blocks. Sherwood Road, the railway station and the Sherwood Arboretum on the river are local landmarks.

Older Sherwood homes commonly have asbestos in later alterations, such as fibro bathrooms, enclosed verandahs, eaves, laundries and garages, while the 1940s to 1960s homes can have fibro walls and roof sheeting. Because so many properties here are being renovated, subdivided or knocked down, asbestos is often uncovered right at the start of a build. Asbestos wasn't banned nationally until 31 December 2003.

T&L can inspect and test suspect material, quote in writing and remove it before your builder or demolisher starts, with containment, approved disposal and the paperwork you need.

Where asbestos hides in Sherwood properties

If a building in Sherwood was built or altered before 2004, these are the spots to be careful with before you cut, drill, sand or knock anything down.

    In homes and sheds

    • Fibro-lined bathroom and laundry additions
    • Sleep-outs and enclosed verandahs
    • Roof sheeting and eaves on 1940s to 1960s homes
    • Old garages, workshops and garden sheds
    • Fibro fences and garden structures
    • Under-house rooms and storage lined with sheeting

Frequently uncovered during renovations, subdivisions and knockdowns.

In shops, warehouses and industrial sites

    • Asbestos cement roofing on older shops and workshops
    • Ceiling and wall linings in clinics and offices
    • Laundries, garages and shared areas in unit blocks
    • Switchboard backing and pipe lagging
    • Material exposed during refurbishments

Sort asbestos out before refurbishment starts.

Think you've found asbestos? Don't drill, sand, sweep, hose down or break it. Keep people and pets away, close off the area, and call us on 0423 648 557. We'll tell you what to do next and arrange an inspection.

    Sherwood asbestos removal: common questions

Why does asbestos turn up so often during Sherwood renovations?

Many older homes have had several rounds of alterations, and fibro was a cheap, common choice for bathrooms, laundries, sleep-outs and eaves. It's usually found when walls and linings come off.

I'm demolishing an old Sherwood house. What should I do about asbestos?

Asbestos in a building to be demolished has to be identified and managed safely before work starts. We inspect, arrange testing where needed, remove it and provide disposal paperwork.

Is it safe to leave asbestos where it is?

Sometimes. Material in good condition that is sealed and won't be disturbed can often stay in place. Damaged or crumbling material, or anything about to be drilled, cut or demolished, should be assessed and removed by a licensed contractor.

Do I need to leave the property while you work?

We recommend staying out of the work zone. We set up containment and let you know before the job starts if you should arrange somewhere else to be for the day.

Do you service Sherwood and the neighbouring riverside suburbs?

Yes. We service Sherwood, Graceville, Chelmer, Corinda, Indooroopilly, Rocklea and the wider south-west.

How long does an asbestos removal job take?

Small residential jobs are often done in a day or two, while larger houses and commercial sites can take several days up to a week. We'll give you a time estimate with your quote.

What happens to the asbestos after it is removed?

Once removed it is wrapped or double-bagged and labelled, carried in licensed vehicles to an approved disposal facility, and you're given paperwork to confirm it was disposed of properly.
